Hey Ho knock on the door !!! UPS have brought me 7170 Annex B router to Banska Bystrica Slovakia.
The out of the box experience was almost painless (except the software CD was hidden in a safe place in the box). I put that down to the fact that I was recovering from post Christmas stress from too much rum soaked pudding. Please note there are two types of routers in use in central Europe at the moment, Annex A and Annex B. Buy the wrong one and there are serious problematic issues to resolve. I have been able to order an Annex B router through a UK company have it shipped to the Slovak Republic. Thank you to the company and AVM in Berlin.
Now would there been any problems when I transfer from my aging but reliable Zyxel router. So lets get cracking.
First job read, YES, read the instructions in the fast set up guide, put in the CD to the main computer and wait. The programme whirs into action and promptly informs me that the static IP previously used on the computer with the AVM CD in it, can not be recognized by the AVM router. Would I like the AVM software to sort this problem out ? YES please ! One click and the disc drive whirs into action again.
The problem is resolved. I now connect the cables to the incoming Telephone line and ADSL point on the telephone splitter, then connected a bit nervously the cable to the AVM router. Immediately my ADSL line is checked. All I have to do is to enter in the ISP connection terms and password when asked for them by the AVM software............... To my astonishment the router connected on the second attempt. The first being my error (mixing up a zero and the letter O).
There is a lot to learn with the sophisticated system for managing analogue ports for standard POTS (Plain Old Telephone System). I was a bit baffled and sent a message to support at AVM.......... The response from AVM was excellent............... Their engineer telephoned and talked this 60 year old, not computer literate bumbling amateur, through the mistakes that I had made..........
The worst problem I am now suffering from is this____ My renegade teenage daughter is no longer able to spend all her evening and early mornings chatting her life away ________ Her notebook is under control of the AVM 7170 Child protection programme............. So I am Persona Non Grata and she is no longer bleary eyed and miserable when she has to get up and go to work on a morning.
THANK YOU AGAIN for the UK companies co-operation with AVM in Berlin.. Fritz Boxe are great ... John Skelton john@inslovakia.sk In exile in the Slovak Republic.
